Relativity of historia nullius

DETAILS:
2018, 25m x 4m, various objects and mediums

This installation deconstructs and asks, “what is History or fact?” in relation to different cultural understandings of time and space within an Australian context. This work uses the western historiographical approach of selection, ordering and interpretation to reveal the racist institutes that are the underbelly of Australian Nationhood. The work presents the political and social constructs of “whiteness” and “blackness” side by side not as a fact of providence or in chronological time, but as a way to reveal the institutions of power, law, financial interest and policy used to justify the process of colonisation. The work is a collaborative work about mutual and productive ally ship, debunking the constructs of our “shared histories” and as a process to acknowledge the truths towards justice and healing. “Historia Nullius” is the distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference-based history of Australia based on race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.
